Osmium was discovered in 1803 by the English chemist Smithson Tennant. He identified osmium while investigating the residue left after dissolving crude platinum in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. Tennant also discovered iridium during the same experiment. While studying these residues, he noticed the formation of a volatile oxide with a strong, unpleasant odor, which he identified as osmium tetroxide. It was from this discovery that he isolated osmium as a new chemical element.
Osmium is a chemical element with the symbol Os and atomic number 76. It belongs to the transition metal group and is the densest known naturally occurring element, with a density of approximately 22.59 g/cm³. Osmium is extremely rare and valuable, being found mainly in platinum and nickel ores.
One of the striking characteristics of osmium is its high resistance to corrosion and wear, which makes it useful in applications requiring durable materials, such as electrical contacts, lamp filaments, and surgical instruments. Due to its density, it is also used in special alloys for high-precision scientific equipment.
However, osmium has a drawback: in its metallic form, it can react with oxygen in the air to form osmium tetroxide (OsO₄), an extremely toxic and volatile compound. For this reason, handling osmium requires specific precautions to avoid exposure to tetroxide.
