Despite having the largest population in Africa, in 2005 Nigeria had no accurate population-based data to plan and evaluate eye care services. A national population-based survey was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and determine the major causes of blindness and low vision.
The survey found that cataract was the commonest cause of severe visual impairment (SVI) and blindness in Nigeria. It was responsible for 45.3% of SVI and 43% of blindness. The survey found that the prevalence of cataract blindness in Nigeria was 1.8% (95% CI: 1.57 – 2.05).
