The ROBDEKON competence centre and thereby the work of the FZI Research Centre for Information Technology within that project focus on developing robot systems, technologies and artificial intelligence methods that can be used primarily in hazardous environments – for example in contaminated areas or such with explosive objects.
The video was created at the end of project phase 1 and shows a use case that was developed by the FZI with assistance of the KIT: the multi-robot retrieval of hazardous materials using two FZI robots as well as a KIT virtual reality environment. The walking robot ANYmal explores the unknown environment and localizes objects in the 3D environment, while the retrieval of objects is performed by the wheeled robotic platform Husky. A human operator can interact and fine tune grasping processes by different assisting features like interactive parameterization methods or a VR-supported 3D environment. The key points of the development are a flexible robotic hardware setup, 3D mapping and navigation, AI-based object localization, a force-based grasping strategy, and - by combining all of it - a solution to plan tasks for robot teams. Human operators can thereby avoid hazardous areas or other dangerous environments.
