►Your BMW N52 will likely require an oxygen sensor change once you get beyond the 100,000-mile mark if it hasn't already. The O2 sensors read the oxygen content in the exhaust gasses and relay the data back to the engine computer, which uses that data to adjust the ignition timing and fuel delivery for the best performance at the given moment. If an oxygen sensor goes bad, the ECU's calibrations become skewed, and the engine cannot run properly or efficiently.
Luckily, an oxygen sensor replacement isn't the toughest job in the world. The N52 engine and BMW's engine bay can make replacement a little tricky, but nothing that requires major engineering and wrenching skill to replace. However, before performing the job, ensure you know which sensor needs replacing. The upstream and downstream sensors give off different readings and are slightly different sensors that are not interchangeable.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, replaces the oxygen sensors on a BMW E91 328xi.
