This scratching, grooming and cleaning aid in the removal of insects and parasites such as ticks and flies, which can cause itchiness. It's amusing to watch an elephant rub itself all over an object to relieve an itch. As humans, we can understand this – it's the same as rubbing our back against a door frame.
