Magical Shooter Putchin Pudding [魔法のシュータープッチンプリン] Game Sample - X68000/Doujin
A X68K Doujin? Yes please. While it's not known by too many people in the West, Japan's line of 80s and 90s PCs were home to many Doujin works. Sharp's X68000 in particular is a bit of an anomaly with several games (commercial or otherwise) that haven't been dumped to this day, but it's pretty neat to see some of the earliest works of Doujin developers. "Magical Shooter Putchin Pudding" is an early work of "Team Dangeroude" (Nepia World) and can basically be described as a Caravan-style vertical mini-shooter. While the game doesn't have a time limit and isn't marketed as a Caravan-style game, it only weighs in at a little over five minutes and is essentially a one-stage gauntlet against varying enemies and bosses with an emphasis on a few scoring mechanics and point-blanking.
As Putchin-chan, you fly around shooting everything that moves; there are no power-ups and a single bomb type (done two ways) that clears the screen of bullets over providing a raw power boost. The player can touch most enemies (this is teased with the meteorites in the very beginning) but will lose a life in they come in contact with any bullets and items can be collected which give a score modifier at the end. The game is not especially challenging in the context of a vert-shmup, especially when compared to the bullet-hell sub-genre, but it offers a few minutes of fun. The main way to rack up points both involve putting yourself in harm's way. The game will add and multiply points based on how close you are to an enemy when it is defeated as well as how many bullets were present on the screen at the time.
