Don't do a PhD?
I love research too much to let it die. Primarily looking at the effect an individual can have, (And avoid gatekeepers and rat races etc.).
And much MUCH more could/should be said on not only who you are competing against as a ramen eating smelly grad student, (Google backed DeepMind, Microsoft backed OpenAi, FacebookFacebook etc.), BUT also who is using your research that is shared with the world freely? For instance, just to pick completely at random, China? Welcome to Xinjiang, enjoy your eternal stay! So... that's another topic for another time.
