Make a fun picnic-themed collage with your loved one with dementia. If you are needing something to talk about with your loved one — sometimes dementia can make this very difficult — having a simple project like this one can provide a topic for conversation. It also provides an opportunity for your loved one to make some personal choices (you can precut and limit choices ahead of time so that it’s not so overwhelming for them) about what they want in their own art. In this way, they can get back a little bit of autonomy in their day.
For this project you will need:
Magazine to cut up /precut pictures of foods and drinks
Scissors
Glue stick
Black watercolour or tempera paint
Q-tip ( cotton bud)
Jar of water
Black pen or small paintbrush

* Please note* The information I present in my videos is based on the therapeutic benefits of art. This is not the same as art therapy, but rather art as a therapy. The practice of art therapy is done with a certified art therapist in a safe, structured environment.
Without doubt, the long road of dementia comes with a lot of big emotions and other hurdles; for the person with the dementia; the caregiver(s); and other friends and family members. Mental health is very important and I strongly advise that you speak with a qualified professional - whether they be an art therapist, a music therapist, counselor, psychologist, or any other mental health professional who is certified in their field - to negotiate the challenges that you may be facing.
