Space day is coming up so let’s make something space-themed together! I wonder if your loved one remembers the ‘race for space’ in the 1960s? Perhaps they remember the first moon-landing? This project may uncover some interesting memories for them.
I will show you how you and your loved one with dementia can paint a space-sky with stars and also, an astronaut standing on the moon. My favourite part is when we add the stars into the sky.
For this project you will need:
A sheet of construction paper (I recommend a dark ‘sky’ colour)
Tempera paint
Paint brush
Water
An extra paintbrush and/or old toothbrush
(Optional) pencil crayons

* Please note* The information I present in my videos is based on the therapeutic benefits of art. This is not the same as art therapy, but rather art as a therapy. The practice of art therapy is done with a certified art therapist in a safe, structured environment.
Without doubt, the long road of dementia comes with a lot of big emotions and other hurdles; for the person with the dementia; the caregiver(s); and other friends and family members. Mental health is very important and I strongly advise that you speak with a qualified professional - whether they be an art therapist, a music therapist, counselor, psychologist, or any other mental health professional who is certified in their field - to negotiate the challenges that you may be facing.
