Making colourful chalk prints is easy and is a great way to co-create with someone who has dementia. A simple activity like this, where a person with dementia can choose their own colors, can help to give back a sense of autonomy. Creating alongside with someone like you can set up an environment where they are comfortable can give them the feeling of belonging. Both of these things are good for one’s mental health.

For this project you will need:

A basin of cold water
Coloured chalk (chalk pastels, sidewalk chalk, etc.)
Something to scrape the chalk with
Plain white paper

* Please note* The information I present in my videos is based on the therapeutic benefits of art. This is not the same as art therapy, but rather art as a therapy. The practice of art therapy is done with a certified art therapist in a safe, structured environment.

Without doubt, the long road of dementia comes with a lot of big emotions and other hurdles; for the person with the dementia; the caregiver(s); and other friends and family members. Mental health is very important and I strongly advise that you speak with a qualified professional - whether they be an art therapist, a music therapist, counselor, psychologist, or any other mental health professional who is certified in their field - to negotiate the challenges that you may be facing.
