Definition: Viscosity is an important property of fluid. It determines how easily a fluid flows.
Adjacent layers of fluid: Are layers of the fluid that are near each other
And each layer is moving at a different velocity.
The layers are separated by a small distance known as the boundary layer.
Due to the different velocities of the layers, the fluids offer some resistance when they are in motion.
We call this resistance “Viscosity.”
Viscosity is a measure of resistance to flow arising due to the internal friction between the fluid layers
Viscosity can also be expressed as a measure of a fluid’s thickness or its resistance to objects passing through
Viscosity is generally measured by the unit known as Pascal-second or centipoise.
High Viscosity Low Viscosity
1. High resistance to shear and tensile forces | Does not resist any forces.
2. Does not deform easily. | Easily be deformed.
3. Thick and sticky | Thin and runny
4. Resistance to flow is very high. |These fluids can easily flow.
5. Molecules have strong interactions. |Poor molecular interaction.
6. Example - Honey, tar, etc. |Examples - water, alcohol, etc.
