Definition
Acids are positively charged ionic compounds as they have abundant Hydrogen ions. In other words, acids are hydrogen donors. Acids release hydrogen ions when dissolved in water.
1. Acids are hydrogen ion donors
2. Sour in taste
3. Turn blue litmus paper red
4. Have pH below 7
Acids can be identified by
1. Colour indicator tests
Phenolphthalein test
Methyl orange
2. Olfactory indicator test
Acids do not change the odor of onion, vanilla, and clove oil.
Some chemical properties of acids
1. Acid + Metals = Release hydrogen gas
2. Metalcarbonate + Acid = Metal Salt + Water + Carbon dioxide
3. Metalhydrogencarbonate + Acid = Metal Salt + Water + Carbon dioxide
4. Acid + Base = Salt + Water
5. Acid + Metal oxide = Salt + Water
