And here we go! A game I'd tried to get working once before and it just didn't want to play nice, but I didn't realize it had been open source for a while and thus had some source ports created for it. Great news, that means I can find a version that actually works well, so here we are!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I mean, who doesn't love shooting Nazis? I'd not been able to play this game before (see the previous 'wouldn't play nicely'), and I prefer to play games in order, so it's good to finally get a chance to see this so I can move to later titles. And it's going to be interesting seeing where the series went after helping form the FPS genre as a whole!

And so far? It's not bad. A 2001 release that feels like a 2001 release. These were the types of games that, for me, really killed the entire genre. That's not to say ALL of them were bad. Just that there was a whole sea of this blandness that got really tiresome. This one? Oh you can tell they're playing around with the new toys. Lots of destructible. We've got cut scenes where they try (and fail) to lip sync. I wonder if it's just generic lip flaps or if they actually tried to do this automatically. Either way, it's sadly not good. Graphics are... almost passable. I still don't like 3D this early becuase these models are pretty rough. But you can tell what they are. And the AI in this has been decent, so far. Even if I can't see the enemy a lot of the time. Grey and black outfits on grey and black walls. Ug. I know it's 'realistic' but this is why the fantasy based games with bright colors is more fun to play. Either way, I am looking forward to what I hope is the first boss fight tomorrow. -- Watch live at   / the_nametag
