In this new year, I plan on changing up the focus on the channel. Looking at a different sort of game than my usual. So to kick the new year off? A Build engine FPS. Smack dab in the middle of my wheelhouse. And not just any Build engine FPS, one that tries to make an RPG in an FPS engine. Which is what I literally started this channel out to showcase. Funny how things work like that sometimes.
As for this game? Oh, it's bad. It's Capstone, and you can SEE the lazy all over the game. Minimal effort throughout. Textures that don't line up, not properly tagging moving walls for how the texture should behave, one level that was actually broken and needed to use a scroll of open door to get through. Oh yea, this is some shovelware jank.
And the sad part is? I'm actually enjoying it. Because as clunky and clumsy as this game is, and it is, I have played so very, VERY much worse. In fact, the game I would contrast this to the most is Descent to Undermountain. There, a compassionate team desperately fought against an engine that simply was not capable of doing what they needed it to do, despite mandate from above. They eventually delivered a half-finished, bug-riddled product rather late and over budget. And it was a disaster. But you can see in that game that the team really did care about what they were making. Sure, ladders DID NOT WORK *shudder*, and part way through the safe space, the healing/saving ankhs just disappeared, and critical progression was sometimes hidden behind hidden walls... the team was TRYING to make the D&D story work out. And those hidden walls? It was the thieves' guild entrance. Of COURSE it would be hidden, with the obvious front door nothing but a trap.
But here? Oh no. Here the engine didn't help, certainly, but that's not what drags this game down. What drags this game down is the complete lack of interest in quality control in the part of the developers. You can see all over this game that it was just about getting it to a mostly working state, and getting it out the door. I can even see them being proud of having finished SOMETHING, and happily moving on to the next. Not EVERYONE cares about quality. And hey, just like there's an audience for terrible movies (guilty), sometimes there's an audience for terrible games. And, like I said, I've played enough worse games that this? I can find entertainment in this. When it works. -- Watch live at / the_nametag
