How To Rap: How Many Words Per Bar
I got a question about how many words should be in a bar, but first I wanted to start by addressing the question at the risk of sounding cliche - there are no stupid questions. Questions are how you get the information you need to improve. Those who are too afraid to ask questions never get that knowledge. Those that ridicule others for asking questions forget where they learned the information, or disregarded that in some other field they don’t understand the fundamental pieces either. Ignore em. On to the question.
When thinking about how many words to put in a bar, you have to break down the components a little further. First - a bar is a measure of time in music, depending on how fast the instrumental is you might be able to use more or less words. It might be hard to get a lot of words in over a really fast song.
Now we have to think about how many words fit within each bar. The problem is, words don’t universally take up the same amount of space. You have to break them into syllables because onomatopoeia takes up the same amount of space as started with a pizza. If you were to strictly use word count, your bars would end up disuniform.
As a general rule, with a normal speed flow, you can fit 10-16 syllables per bar comfortably. This number can easily be changed, but that’s the general range that will be easiest for beginners to pick up. So, to clarify and wrap things up - use syllable count instead of words to fill your bars. If you don’t know how already, learn to count syllables - it will come in handy in multiple ways.
