How To Rap - Writing Punchlines (Battles)
In rap, there's two main types of punchlines, those for battle rap and those for other mediums like songs, cyphers, ect. Although similar, there are some key differences in how you build your content. For this, we'll focus on battle punchlines.
Punchlines are the core of every rap battle. They're the umph behind your lines, the wow factor. Battle without punchlines and you will ALWAYS lose.
The point of a punchline in battles is to attack your opponent. This is where people sometimes get a little lost. A phrase like:
I'm a dangerous villain, you think that I'm lying?
Nah I'm the hero in this, check the way that I'm flying!
Has absolutely no impact or insult directed at your opponent.
A basic punch is pretty easy to construct. Just say something negative about the other person, try to insult them.
You suck
You're ugly
You're a prick
But you don't wanna just use a basic punch, that makes you seem generic and boring. Anyone can write a simple generic punch. You wanna find a way to relay the insult in a more clever way. Try using more complex word choice, more advanced concepts like wordplay.
For example expanding from before
You look like a porcupine but you're more of a prick!
You've got 2 of the insults going on in there plus the wordplay on prick, 1 being porcupines have sharp needles, the other is calling someone a prick. You see how much more impact that has than just saying 'you're a prick!'
Let's go over a few more examples:
A tub of lard is less fatty than you are
You couldn't 'hold yourself together' even with tape and glue
Similes and metaphors are great ways to develop punches. Comparing traits of people to other objects or situations. Also references to pop culture. Try to be original and develop a level of complexity that, at the very least, elevates your punchlines above other, generic punchlines.

A couple other things to consider, the setup to a punchline is essential, it can turn a jab into a haymaker when done properly. Try to keep your setups relevant Also personals and nameplays are another way to get concepts for a battle if you know who you're facing beforehand. I'll expand on some of these concepts in the future.
