What is a bar in Rap Music?
When I was doing research for this topic I ran into a lot of confusion and a lot of mixed opinions. There's a lot of people who are confused about this topic. So I went through a lot of articles and a lot of information to make sure I could give you guys a nice, pretty summary of what a bar is.
For starters, a bar is a musical term. It refers to a measure of time in music, dependant on the tempo. Most rap music is in a 4/4 time signature, which means there will be 4 beats per bar or measure.
As far as rap writing goes, a bar is NOT always the same length as a line, although it can be. Lines in rap can pretty much be broken up arbitrarily, meaning you can fit 2 lines or one line into a bar, depending on how you break them up, where you choose to rhyme, and how fast you decide to flow. Again, a bar is a measure of time in music.
Now bars can also be used to refer to lyrical content, because you regularly hear phrases like "Ohhhh he's got bars" and "Lets hear some bars then" When used in this context, it would logically be an appeal to the content that is created within the time period of a bar. This is pretty much where all the arguments happen. People say bars are one line or two lines or who knows what else, instead of relating them to the 4 beats in the song (in 4/4 time signature).
The slang usage to describe content, makes it really confusing when someone is also learning about how to count bars or what bars are musically. The definitions and lengths get all sorts of mixed up.
Just know for counting bars, it's a musical length based on beats. For having bars, spit something hot.
