Liver function tests: Part 2: Classification of LFTs
I’m Dr. Vijaya Marakala explained in this video classification of liver function tests. Liver function tests are biochemical, histological, and radiological tests used to help diagnose and monitor liver disease. There are various classifications of liver function tests commonly known as LFTs. In this video, I have explained tests based on the functions of the liver and a few radiological and histopathological tests. LFTs based on excretory functions of the liver are serum total bilirubin, direct/conjugated, and indirect/unconjugated bilirubin. Urine bile pigments, bilirubin, bile salts are also tests based on excretory functions of the liver. Estimation of plasma protein and prothrombin time are tests based on the synthetic function of the liver. Enzyme markers routinely sort investigations under liver function tests are ALT, AST, ALP, and GGT. Test based on the detoxification functions of the liver is the determination of blood ammonia. Radiological liver function tests are abdominal USG, CT scan, MRI. Ultra-sonographic guided liver biopsy helps in the histopathological diagnosis of various liver diseases.
