Liver function tests: Part 1: Functions of the liver. I'm Dr. Vijaya Marakala explained in this video the main functions of the liver. The liver is an essential and most important organ in our body and it is considered as the largest gland. Liver weighs approximately 1.5 kg. Liver has got the capacity to regenerate and this is of great help in case of partial hepatectomy and liver transplantation. Major functions of the liver are metabolic function, synthetic function, excretory or secretory function, detoxification function, and storage function. Synthesis of plasma proteins and clotting factors are the most important synthetic functions of the liver. Synthesis and release of bile is considered as the most important excretory function as it contains bile salts and conjugated bilirubin. Toxic ammonia converted to nontoxic urea in the liver and this is considered as the most important detoxification function of the liver. Liver plays an essential role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, fat. vitamins and minerals. Various drugs are metabolized in the liver and released to portal circulation thereby eventually filtered through the kidney and excreted in the urine. The storage function of the liver is also important as liver stores glycogen, fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin B 12, and minerals. Various enzymes like alkaline phosphatase, AST, ALT helps in the differential diagnosis of hepatobiliary disorders.
