What can you catch in portland harbour? My first ever attempt at fishing this venue so I was about to find out. Fishing at Weymouth and Portland Harbour - kayak fishing with Ian 'Dizzyfish' from the Hobie Lynx Kayak in the hope of finding some fish to take home for the pot and provide food for the family. It's Friday the 13th and a hard frost the night before, combined with a 3mph off shore wind with bright sunshine is hardly the ingredients to get us very excited, but it does leave us hopeful that the water might just be clear enough for the squid to go on the feed, even though the squid season hasn't quite started. In this video we launch from the main slipway at Weymouth harbour but seem to be cursed before we even start. A confrontation from a bystanding dogooder, followed by a stern talking to from the harbour master, who turned out to be a nice chap! Thankfully the day turns around for the better and after 12 and a half hours on the water, we reluctantly head back home. Using a 40g Fiiish Minnow a weight on my Sibiki feathers, I quickly discovered tub gurnard, followed by a hungry cuttlefish, which set the scene for the rest of the day.
With so many features to explore, we were spoilt for choice and decided to go our seperate ways in pursuit of bream, bass and wrasse. We weren't dissapointed, but the real star of the show was Ian's huge ballan wrasse, along with a plethera of obliging squid.
