Building Platforms with Intent: You can not not build a Platform
You can not not build a platform. And yes, you read that right. Even if you think you're not building a platform, practices and patterns build up in your organization and while they may not be very effective or coherent, you very well could argue that this also is a platform. It's just one that's neither very good nor designed and built intentionally.
Matthias Biel, API strategist at @SOFTWAREAGglobal, talks about how on the one had complexity in the IT space is continuously growing, but how on the other hand that's an inescapable reality that we have to learn to live with. There are two main factors to keep in mind:
• The essential complexity of the digital space is continuously growing because we simply do more and more things in that space. That trend is driven by how the world is changing and the resulting business needs. Just think about how #AI is increasing both the appetite for data and the potential for additional digital capabilities.
• The accidental complexity may grow as well because managing our digital capabilities becomes more challenging. As more and more digital capabilities are being created, how can we manage them in such a way that we don't add to the essential complexity of the digital space?
