Operations in Complex IT Landscapes: Governance as a Critical Ingredient
IT landscapes are not only growing, they are also becoming more complex and diverse. This raises the question of how operations in these increasingly complex landscapes should look like, and how operations have to adapt to this new reality.
Matthias Biel, API strategist at @SOFTWAREAGglobal, explains the various forces that organizations are experiencing today and that drive them to think about governance as an essential aspect of operations:
• Complexity: IT landscapes are becoming more complex because of the growing footprint of IT in general and also because IT is moving into more and more business functions. Understanding an organization's IT landscape thus becomes both harder and more important than ever.
• Compliance: Depending on the industry and the region, there can be a lot of regulation and legislation that organizations have to comply with. Compliance issues can become very expensive very quickly, so it's important to govern the IT landscape so that compliance can be more easily implemented and checked.
• Cost: Larger IT landscapes mean increasing cost, and some activities such as moving to the cloud can incur substantial cost. In order to better control and plan cost, governance can help to look at the current state and look at options how to reduce cost.
The main focus in most IT discussions today understandably is on how to deliver new capabilities in an effective and cost-efficient manner. But it's probably fair to assume that we will see an increase for demand in the governance space, and the sooner organizations are considering that direction, the better they can weave governance into their IT practices and platforms.
