Metaphor in English
Hello everyone and I hope you are all doing fine.
Today's topic is another interesting one. Metaphors.
A metaphor is a word or phrase that is used in an imaginative way to show that somebody / something has the same qualities as another.
For example ‘Her words were a knife in his heart’ is a metaphor.
Metaphors are usually used to imply a point with a great deal of strength yet in a poetic or light hearted manner of conversation, so that it doesnt sound harsh or condescending.
Here are a few more examples of metaphors -
1. Life is a highway - Meaning that life is a long journey that has many ups and downs, rough roads and smooth, straight stretches as well as winding hilly paths.
2. She is a shining star - Meaning that her talents or strengths are bright and unmatchable, just as a star is so distant that it's almost impossible for us to travel to it.
3. He is an early bird - Meaning that he is someone who wakes up early and makes use of all the time, and hence, the opportunities that a day has to offer.
