Articles in English - Part 1
Hello everyone, and hope you are all doing great. Today we are going to be talking about a very basic tool in grammar, ARTICLES. The English language has just three articles - A, An & The.
THE is known as a definite article because it limits the meaning of a noun to just one particular thing. The definite article can be used with singular, plural or uncountable nouns.
Ex. - "Please pass me the sauce." I'm using the article "the" here because I am referring to one particular sauce.
A & An are known as indefinite articles. The indefinite article indicates that a noun refers to a general idea rather than anything in particular.
A is used when it comes before a word that begins with a consonant.
Ex. - Please hand me a book; any book will do.
An is used when it comes before a word that begins with a vowel.
Ex. - Please hand me an autobiography; any autobiography will do.
