Hello everyone and hope you are all doing great! It's time for another interesting topic today! And that topic is fillers.
Fillers are words, sounds, or phrases people often use to “fill in” empty spaces in communication. For example, "ummm" or "uhhh", etc. In speech, they usually indicate the speaker is thinking about what to say next, and hence, building a cohesive train of thought.
Filler words usually have a negative effect and reflect poorly on your communication skills. But because they come out unconsciously, they can be hard to, "you know", stop.
Here are some of the most common examples of fillers used while speaking -
1. Very, Really, Highly - These are actually adverbs of intensity, and are mistakenly used in situations where they don’t add any value to the sentence. Save them for the times when you truly need them.
2. Just - This is not always a filler word; it can show a recent action or act as a synonym for merely. However, it can easily be over-used so try rewriting the sentence without it and see if the meaning changes.
3. Like - One of the most notorious filler words, like is common in speech when the speaker prepares their next sequence of words. Don’t confuse like as a filler word when used as a comparitive term or for showing fondness for something.
This is not the end of the topic. Far from it. But to know more, you know what to do.
