Molecular Biology: Part 2: DNA Structure. In this video, I have explained the structural organization of DNA. Deoxyribonucleic acid is polymers of deoxyribonucleotides attached to each other by
phosphodiester linkages. Each deoxyribonucleotide is composed of deoxyribonucleoside &
inorganic phosphate. Each deoxyribonucleoside is composed of nitrogen bases and sugar deoxyribose. The nitrogenous bases are purines and pyrimidines. The two purine bases are adenine and guanine. The two pyrimidine bases in DNA are cytosine and thymine. The deoxyribonucleotides are linked together by phosphodiester bonds between the 3' hydroxyl of the sugar of one nucleotide through a phosphate molecule to the 5' hydroxyl of another sugar nucleotide. The sugar and phosphate linkages form the backbone of the DNA to which the variable bases are attached. The sequence of the DNA is always written in the 5’ to 3’ direction. The genome of a cell consists of all its genetic information, encoded in deoxyribonucleic acid. In eukaryotes or DNA. DNA is located mainly in nuclei, but small amounts are also found in mitochondria. Deoxyribonucleic acids or DNA is packaged in chromosomes along with proteins in tightly coiled structures.
