This past week saw the beginning of the new school season for many young people. With the return of ‘back to school’, I created a project with this theme in mind. This project is fairly simple in nature and aims at getting your loved one to reminisce about their own school days while incorporating those very important fine motor skills.
The final product creates a card that can simply sit as a decoration for your loved one or serve as a greeting card for someone. Your loved one may enjoy writing an encouraging note for someone who is starting their new school year
Advice that I did not include in the video - if your loved one wants to give the card to someone and that person turns out to be ‘fictional’, just roll with it. Being able to express emotion and write a thoughtful sentiment will contribute to the overall mental wellbeing of your loved one. Feeling useful and helpful are important things for the confidence of people with dementia and in cases like this, these feelings trump any need for accuracy in a story.
For this project you will need:

Watercolour paints
Jar of water
Paintbrush
Napkin
Scissors
Gluestick
A sheet of card stock (any colour)

* Please note* The information I present in my videos is based on the therapeutic benefits of art. This is not the same as art therapy, but rather art as a therapy. The practice of art therapy is done with a certified art therapist in a safe environment.
Without doubt, the long road of dementia comes with a lot of big emotions and other hurdles; for the person with the dementia; the caregiver(s); and other friends and family members. Mental health is very important and I strongly advise that you speak with a qualified professional - whether they be an art therapist, a music therapist, counselor, psychologist, or any other mental health professional who is certified in their field - to negotiate the challenges that you may be facing.
