Cinematography Masterclass S1L3: Image Sensor
It is a small piece of hardware that is placed inside the camera, you do not need to change it or replace it, in fact, and you’re not even allowed to touch it. You clean it with maximum care and special brushes.
It is not like you need to replace it after some clicks or time, you only replace it if it is faulty.
It has multiple small pixel-type sensors, and their job is to capture light as it reaches.
These small pixel-type sensors convert the light into signals and then further process them into an image. This image gets stored in the memory card or other storage device.
We will also cover other technical details in the advanced topics where we discuss colors.
For now, let’s remember that the job of the sensor is to capture light which is processed by the Exposure Triangle and convert into an image.
Have a look at the image again,
The light is passing through the lenses and reaching the sensor, the sensor can only process the light it receives, and how much light will reach the sensor is decided by the exposure sensor
So, keeping what the sensor does in mind, we now discuss the exposure triangle
The image sensor is made of very small pixels, these pixels react to light colors which are Red, Green, and Blue.
When light hits these small sensors, these pixels are programmed to convert the light into signals and then converted it into an image.
When the image is created, it goes to the storage device such as a memory card or the computer hard drive.
So, all these millions of tiny pixels are individually capable of processing light into signals and then another technology converts these signals into an image.
In other words,
The image sensor would sense the light colors and absorb them to convert them into electronic signals and then further process them into an image.
Do not worry If this is still confusing, we will talk about it and discuss it so much in the course, that you will understand it totally.
ISO works in conjunction with the image sensor which we will discuss tomorrow when we start the exposure triangle.
