ATING GURO is the only party in the 2013 party-list election that fielded a public school teacher as its first nominee. Benjo Basas is a teacher in Caloocan City and the national chairperson of the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC). And despite being a new player in the party-list, ATING GURO made it to the winning group. However, several circumstances from the Supreme Court's overturning of Comelec's earlier decision to disqualify some parties to the proclamation of excess seats for five parties prevented the proclamation of the party. A case has been filed to the Supreme Court for final decision.

ATING GURO is an initiative that aims to truly realize the representation of education workers, especially public school teachers and employees of the DepEd in Philippine legislature thru the party-list system. The party believes that:
1. The party-list system should represent the marginalized and underrepresented sector of the society in Congress and should not be used to further the vested interests of some groups and individual like the big businesses and political clans;
2. The education sector, both public and private, having almost a million personnel and directly handling over 20 million children daily is a very huge marginalized sector and therefore entitled to more representation in the legislature; and
3. Teachers and education employees, especially those from DepEd would best represent the sector for they grasp the issues and daily experiences of the teachers. They also understand the needs of the sector perfectly
