Testing Cloud Infrastructure Created In Terraform.
In 2024, testing cloud infrastructure created with Terraform remains challenging. TerraTest is a popular tool for advanced testing, but it’s not as straightforward as native testing within Terraform, which primarily checks if values are as expected. There's a need for lightweight tests integrated into the commit process and more robust integration tests for cloud environments. One approach is to use LocalStack, a tool that emulates AWS cloud services locally, to speed up testing during pull requests (PRs). This allows infrastructure testing without the overhead of deploying real cloud resources. LocalStack has improved significantly, offering better support for various cloud services. A recommended strategy is to run tests against LocalStack during feature branch development and then conduct final tests on the actual cloud environment upon merging. For easy integration, GitHub Actions can be configured to include LocalStack as a service, allowing tests to run in a local AWS-like environment during the CI/CD pipeline. This setup enhances testing efficiency while ensuring that infrastructure behaves as expected in the real cloud environment.
