In the Masai tradition, the bride's side does not give dowry during the wedding, but the groom's side gives the bride's dakshina. When this dowry is accepted by the bride and her family members, the marriage is confirmed and the rituals continue. On receiving the dowry, the bride's head is shaved. Then she goes to the place where all the elders of the family are sitting. She kneels there. First the father spits on the daughter's forehead and chest. Along with the father, the elders of the family also do the same. As elders bless the daughter of their house by spitting. It is their belief that by doing this, the couple will have a happy marriage.
