Bhoj Wetland Status
Bhoj Wetland, located in Bhopal, comprises two man-made reservoirs: the Upper Lake, created by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century, and the Lower Lake, built 200 years ago from the Upper Lake’s overflow. Designated a Ramsar site in November 2002, Bhoj Wetland is recognized for its international importance. The Ramsar Convention, adopted in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, aims to conserve global wetlands, with parties committing to designate such sites based on specific criteria. These criteria include supporting endangered species, threatened ecosystems, large numbers of waterbirds, or providing vital resources for aquatic life. India, a signatory since 1982, currently has 82 Ramsar sites. Recent reports suggesting Bhoj Wetland's potential delisting have been refuted by the Union Government.
