In "The Hired Girl," it's 1911 and main character Joan Skraggs trudges through a hopeless life on a hardscrabble farm where her tyrannical father rules with an iron fist. But Joan, full of brains and gumption, isn't content to scrub pots all day. She wants to read books, dream dreams, and perhaps even get an education. When trouble erupts with her father, Joan makes her way to the big city of Baltimore, where she must rely on her wits--and her willingness to work hard--to make a way for herself. Which is exactly what she does.
