Towards model-based design of washing machines via synergistic coupling of multi-body dynamics (MBD) simulation and particle-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Washing machines are complex dynamic systems. The suspended tub is a pendulum (simple or inverse, depending on machine type), which receives dynamic excitation from the unbalanced rotating loads inside. Stabilizing washing groups is a challenging topic for engineers. The first step certainly coincides with the optimization of both suspension layout and inertial properties. However, additionally devices such as balancing rings may be added to the drum for higher performances. The response of the described system is high nonlinear and very sensitive to design parameters, exciting loads, and control system. Additionally, the understanding of cause-effect relationships through physical experiments may be almost impossible.
Simulation is a valid approach to speed up the design of washing groups and balancing rings. However, the digital models must be created including all relevant details of mechanics and fluid dynamics. In this webinar, we will give an overview of modern methods that have proven to be very effective in this area of engineering.
