Hello.
Today is April 12th, 2022, and we're catching spring roach spawning on our property. I've been hearing rumors about the fish moving up the Sula River for two weeks now, but this roach spawning run only reached me a couple of days ago.
I haven't measured the river's water temperature, but the dandelions and apricots aren't blooming here yet. They say the full feeding frenzy hasn't arrived yet, but there are already plenty of fishermen on the banks, so it's time to give it a try.
So, the spring roach run is characterized by active feeding among the carp-like fish. At this time, they move upstream against the current and feed profusely.
There's absolutely no need to select a hook, its size, length, or leader diameter... They bite on everything.
The locals fish without a feeder, using a regular sinker and whatever tackle they have. The only advantage of using a classic feeder rod is the choice of distance and the ability to clip.
The roach run in spring is always along a small river, but it's better if we can hit the feeder right in the center of the fish.

Today it got colder, and the temperature dropped to 4°C.
Looking ahead, I'll say that this didn't affect the fish bite.
Rod: Zemex Rampage 3.9 m, 150g casting weight.
60g nozzle feeder with ground hooks, 0.15mm leader 50 cm long, Gamakatsu F22 #10 hook, eight-strand #0.6 cord according to Japanese classification. I fish without a shock leader since the casting isn't very powerful.
The bait is a red worm, and the groundbait is a homemade millet and pea porridge.
But none of that matters!
What's more important is the fishing distance, in our case exactly 20 meters. Casting a meter further or closer will result in a worse bite. This was confirmed by a partner who fishes with a crocodile hook without a clip.
The spring roach run doesn't lend itself to beautiful video footage due to its monotony.

Bites are very frequent, lasting on average from two to 20 seconds.
You can often catch two or three fish on a single worm.
If you have to wait longer, it's likely something is tangled, the hook is caught in old foliage, or you missed the fish's trail. A little porridge in the feeder from time to time is often simply useless, but it's better with it!
Nevertheless, fishing during the roach spawning run in the spring on the Sula River is a very exciting activity.
Occasionally, you'll get bites from relatively large bream, but today it's the roach that really shines.
At first, it was unusual to use a heavy feeder on a small river; the feeder kept drifting to the opposite bank, but I soon discovered the charm of a small river.
The roach run offers the opportunity for an ultra-budget, exciting, and thrilling fishing experience.
This is one of the few fishing experiences where the catch more than pays for itself (including gas).
