Why were PS1 games so annoying?
Today, games are so flawless they're almost indistinguishable from reality. But there's something strange. 4K graphics, ray tracing technologies, massive budgets... None of it can evoke the pure, inexplicable fear felt 25 years ago in front of that tube television. The blank eyes of a 64-bit character are more terrifying than a modern monster. But the strange thing is, when you close the game and go to bed, that flawless monster doesn't enter your dreams. Because reality frightens us, but uncertainty terrifies us. So how does technology make us less afraid as it advances? Why do low-polygon games still send shivers down our spines? It's that meaningless unease behind the pixels.
