About the place: Longluan Lake is located at the lowest point of the Hengchun Rift Valley Plain. It is formed by the accumulation of rainwater and flowing water from all directions. Due to the low-lying terrain, during the rainy season, the nearby fields accumulate water and become drenched in water. Sometimes it floods, which brings trouble to farmers. In 1948, the government allocated funds to build an embankment, and Longluan Lake was turned into an artificial reservoir.
The vast lake covers an area of about 175 hectares. It not only helps the irrigation of farmland, but also attracts migratory birds every autumn and winter. It becomes a "wild bird paradise" in southern Taiwan.
In 1982, the Kenting National Park was established, and the area was designated as a special scenic area of the national park. The Longluantan Nature Center opened in 1994, becoming the first nature center in Taiwan with the theme of bird ecology.
In 2007, Longluantan was listed as a national wetland. The lake area and the surrounding land make an important flood detention area in Hengchun during the rainy season. In addition to providing an environment for birds to inhabit and forage, it has a key impact on flood control and microclimate regulation.
