Joseph Conrad had, shall we say, a complicated relationship with the concept of imperialism. So complicated, in fact, that he spent most of "Heart of Darkness" trying to sort out his feelings on the subject. His conclusion? It's the main theme of "Heart of Darkness": Hypocrisy.
