Venice Beach Cleanup Clears Homeless Encampments Without Issuing Citations
Venice, Los Angeles – Friday, November 1, 2024 — In an ongoing effort to maintain public safety and cleanliness, a coordinated weekly cleanup operation was conducted at Venice Beach, covering the restrooms and surrounding areas. Led by Los Angeles Park Rangers, along with the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, LA County Beaches and Harbors, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., the initiative focused on removing a homeless encampment and ensuring sanitary conditions along the beach.
The cleanup began at the Venice Fishing Pier Parking Lot, progressing northward through key areas. Crews stopped at the Venice Boulevard Beach Restrooms, the skatepark, and the Graffiti Walls, cleaning and clearing each site before continuing to the Rose Avenue Beach Parking Lot and the northernmost public restrooms. Workers in protective gear carefully sorted through waste, removing both hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
Park Rangers were present to oversee the operation, ensuring compliance with Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits tents and camping structures in city parks. No citations were issued during the cleanup, reflecting the city’s compassionate approach toward managing public spaces and homelessness.
Notably, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), which typically provides essential services such as food, water, and hygiene kits during these operations, was absent. Additionally, a representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office, who often supports the cleanup efforts, was unavailable due to commitments at the Dodgers World Series Championship Parade in Downtown Los Angeles.
This weekly initiative remains a critical component of the city’s broader strategy to address homelessness with a focus on supportive measures rather than punitive actions. By prioritizing public health and safety through regular cleanups, Los Angeles aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for all while handling the complexities of homelessness with a balanced, humane approach.
