LAPD Oversees Homeless Encampment Cleanup in Venice as Crews Clear Public Spaces
Venice, Los Angeles – October 31, 2024 — A coordinated cleanup operation took place across multiple locations on Main Street, Westminster Dog Park and Ozone Avenue in Venice, led by the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works in partnership with Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. This initiative focused on clearing the area efficiently and safely, with a priority on public health and sanitation.
Sanitation workers discarded several trash cans believed to belong to homeless individuals due to their contents, addresses not matching nearby buildings, and their position obstructing the sidewalk. This decision was made to maintain pedestrian accessibility and safety.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were on-site to oversee the process, ensuring a smooth and incident-free operation. Workers in protective gear carefully sorted hazardous and non-hazardous waste, underscoring the city’s commitment to providing safe and clean public spaces in high-traffic areas.
No citations were issued, although the operation followed Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits tents in public spaces such as city parks. This cleanup is part of a broader, ongoing weekly initiative designed to address homelessness while promoting public safety and cleanliness. The multi-agency task force, which includes the LAPD and Department of Public Works, continues to prioritize accessible and safe public spaces for all community members.
