The Light Bytes team are thrilled to be kicking off Season 3 with the next edition in our series of Lighting Designers from Around the World. Join us as we spend an evening talking to South African lighting designer Mandla Mtshali – a young Johannesburg designer who is taking the industry by storm, not just with his lighting designs, but with his clothing range too. We’ll be talking to Mandla about how he got started, his work and processes, the state of the industry in South Africa while still keeping it ‘light’.
Mandla Mtshali
Mandla began his journey in theatre and lighting by joining the Technician Training Program at the Dance Factory in Johannesburg. He then went on to study Performing Arts Technology at the Tshwane University of Technology. After his studies Mandla worked as a freelance technician for numerous companies including MGG Prodcutions, Production Projects, Vuyani Dance Theatre and the French Institute of South Africa. Like many others he also spent time working at the various arts festivals that take place throughout the year – the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, KKNK, Aardklop, Macufe, Dance Umbrella and Arts Alive!, before taking up a permanent position at the renowned Market Theatre as a stage manager. Mandla later joined the newly built Lyric Theatre as Head of Lighting and Resident Lighting Designer where he had the opportunity to work on a variety of different productions. Mandla founded his production and design company Amandla Designs in 2015 and his career has gone from strength to strength, earning him three Naledi Theatre Award nominations for Best Lighting Design.
