Light Bytes - Theatre to Architecture
We all love light; it’s why we do what we do. We are fascinated by color; how changes in intensity or shifts in hue can alter the way we feel, or the way something looks. The past few years has seen a global shift in the awareness of, and the importance of light. The power of light beyond the simple function of mere illumination; the power to transform, to tell stories, to captivate and enhance. Few people understand this better than our next panel of speakers – all of whom made the transition from theatrical lighting design to the world of architectural lighting design. Using the skills they learned in theatre and bringing them to museums, galleries, theme parks and attractions as well as hotels, retail and public spaces, they are amongst the top lighting designers in the world. Join us as we chat to Anne Militello, Paul Pamboukian, David Gilbey and Martina Alagna about the art and craft of employing theatrical lighting techniques into an architectural environment.
Meet the Panel
Anne Militello
Anne is a renowned theater and architectural lighting designer as well as an educator and fine artist with a career spanning all aspects of creating with light. Her career began in theater and music clubs in New York City and eventually to Broadway, international opera, and touring concert stages. She was a Show Lighting Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering and Universal Studios before starting her own company where designs for concert tours and architectural projects are created.
She received the OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence, the Paul Waterbury Award of Distinction from the IESNA, an IALD Award of Merit and Themed Lighting Designer of the Year from Lighting Dimensions International among others.
She has been featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, Newsweek, Time Magazine among others and was a subject of the BBC Documentary “Interesting People, Interesting Jobs”.
She is the Founder of Vortex Lighting in Los Angeles and Head of Lighting Programs at the California Institute of the Arts.
Paul Pamboukian
Paul has over 40 years of experience in varied disciplines pertaining to lighting design. Paul studied music at University of Cape Town and the Guildhall School of Music, London, before turning to theatre. He was chief theatre lighting designer for PACT at the State Theatre in Pretoria where he was responsible for lighting productions of opera, ballet and drama. In 1982 he co-established Production Projects, a lighting and staging company, specialized in product launches, lighting design and distribution.
In 1990 he initiated Paul Pamboukian Associates Lighting Design, a design studio working exclusively in the medium of light applied to the fields of architectural, interior and landscape lighting design. To date, over 400 architectural projects have been completed. Paul is a frequent lecturer on light and design.
He is a professional member of IALD – (International Association of Lighting Designers).
David Gilbey
David Gilbey is the Founder of d-lighting - lighting and visual design. As the world has become more visual, David’s theatrical lighting background puts him in a great position to master the artistic and technical aspects of a project.
David has a wholistic approach to design and his DNA is to take a story telling approach to lighting design and to try to capture the soul of a project, a philosophy he has deployed on numerous prestigious developments globally.
David believes in the crossover between theatre and architecture, regularly attends PLASA and is amazed that he does not bump into more architectural lighting designers while there!
David is a renowned speaker on the international lighting circuit.
Martina Alagna
Martina is a passionate Architectural Lighting Designer based in London with a strong background in visual and performing arts. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Italy and worked as a lighting design technician within theatres in the Far East and Australia. She moved from the ephemeral world of theatre, to the more perpetual realm of architectural lighting design, following a Masters in Lighting Design at Politecnico in Milan. Since 2017, she has worked at the award-winning lighting consultancy Nulty Lighting in London designing creative lighting solutions for hospitality, commercial, retail, exhibition, public realm projects and lighting masterplans in the Middle East.
Martina is part of the Lighting Design Awards’ 40 under 40 Class of 2020 and a Women in Lighting supporter.
