Nelson Cavaquinho's "A Flor e o Espinho" (lyrics by Guilherme de Brito) is a song with beautiful harmonic progressions and refined modulations. This is my transcription of Roberta Sa's version. She's accompanied by Trio Madeira, a group of two guitars and one mandolin, specialized in the revival of the traditional Choro genre.
Guitarist Marcello Gonçalves from the Trio plays the 7-string guitar ("violao de sete cordas" in Portuguese) an instrument that played an essential role in the development of the Brazilian popular music. It's a modified standard 6-string guitar with the addition of one extra string, usually a C in the bass register (C2). It was introduced to Brazil in the early 1900′s, probably by Russian immigrants as a steel-string guitar (the 7-string guitar is a Russian invention). It immediately became part of the Choro bands and Brazilian guitarists developed a technique called the "baixaria" counterpoint i.e a bassline, a walking bass that connects the different chords of the harmonic progression, usually a descending scale.
