This song, written by Bossa Nova's foremost songwriter Tom Jobim (1927 -- 1994) is included in his '64 album "The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim". "Samba do Avião", the "Samba of the Airplane", talks about the joy that overwhelmed Jobim (known for having a terrible fear of flying) every time he landed at Rio airport. For a long time I thought the lyrics where the work of Brazil's emblematic poet Vinicius de Moraes (they're actually Jobim's), who would simply refuse to get on an airplane (after he miraculously survived a terrible plane accident in the city of Montevideo) and would exclusively travel by land or sea. Paradoxically, as a gesture of recognition, Jobim's name (who celebrated Rio in so many of his songs e.g. "Garota de Ipanema") was given to the airport in 1999. Who knows? Maybe one day Vinicius too will get "his" airport...
