To create a basic DIY motor, you'll need copper wire, two large paper clips, a D-cell battery, a small magnet, and tape. Start by wrapping the copper wire around a cylindrical object about 10 times to form a coil, leaving 2 inches of wire on each end. Strip the insulation off these ends. Next, bend the paper clips to create supports with loops at the top, and tape them to opposite ends of the battery. Place the coil ends through these loops. Attach the magnet to the side of the battery. To operate, give the coil a gentle push to start it spinning. This simple setup creates an electromagnetic motor, where the interaction between the magnetic field of the current-carrying coil and the permanent magnet causes the coil to rotate continuously.
