We know that a #mirror forms an #image of an #object in front of it, due to regular reflection of light. Let's place another mirror adjacent to this mirror, touching one of its edges. This mirrors too forms an image. Thus we can see two images. If we bring the two mirrors, we can see that the number of images is changing.
Why ? because of #multiple_reflection of light by the two mirrors. The light #reflected by one mirror is #incident on the another mirror and is reflected again by the second mirror.
Thus the two #primary_images, act as objects again and form the #secondary_images.
The images increase in number as we decrease the angle between the two mirrors. It means there must be relation between the two, right?
The relation is, n =( 360/theta) - 1
Where n is number of images and theta is the angle between the two mirrors.
If theta = 120⁰ , then we get 2 images.
For theta 90⁰, the images are 3.
If we reduce theta to 60⁰, how many images will we get?
We get 5 images. See how beautiful pattern I got using two mirrors placed at an angle of 60⁰.
Beads and bangle pieces are used as objects.
A #kaleidoscope also forms such patterns. However a kaleidoscope has three mirrors forming a triangle.
A kaleidoscope is used #fabric_and_carpet_designers to get unique patterns everytime.
Now if the mirrors are at an angle of 30⁰ we get 11 images. Can you tell me the number of images formed when the two mirrors are placed #parallel, facing each other? Oh! we get so many images, they are #infinite. Why ?
The image formed by one mirror acts as an object for the another mirror. So we get #infinite_images.
At a #barber's shop, the barber holds a second mirror at the back of your head , right? It helps you to see the image of the back side of your head in the front mirror.
Multiple reflection is used in #periscopes as well.
They are used in #submarines, to see the object on surface of water. So wasn't it great fun to play with mirrors and form multiple images.
