Red cabbage contains a pigment called#anthocyanin. It changes colour in# acids and #bases. Hence it is used as a natural acid-base #indicator.
#How to prepare the #extract#
1) Chop some red cabbage and add it to hot water and slight heat for some time.
2) The water will turn purple. Strain and get the extract.
3) Let it cool down completely and then use it as an #indicator.
OR
1) Chop some cabbage and put it in a mixer jar.
2) And some warm water and blend it.
3) Strain the contents to get clear extract.
#Activity:
1) Take some solutions easily available in your house like salt solution, sugar solution, water, vinegar, baking soda solution, tamarind extract, dish washer soap solution, glass cleaner solution etc. in transparent glass containers.
2) Add small amount extract to each of them ad observe the colour change that takes place.
3) In acids the red cabbage extract changes to #pink- red.
4) In bases the colour of the extract turns blue- green and may be yellow in #strong bases.
5) in neutral solutions having #pH nearly equal to 1, the extract remains purple.
6) Based on the colour change, we can differentiate the solutions as acids, bases or neutral.
