A spectrum is formed due to a phenomenon called #dispersion_of_light.
A glass prism also disperses light. It has three rectangular faces and two triangular faces. We keep the prism on one of the triangular faces. The angle of the prism is 60 degrees.
A prism placed in the path of light changes the direction of light .
The light coming out of the prism bends towards the base of the prism. The light that strikes the face of the prism is the #incident_light and the light which comes out of the prism is called the #emergent_light.
Here the light passes from air into glass and then comes out into air. So its passes from one #medium into another.
You know that light gets refracted when it passes through different media. So, Refraction happens here too. The diagram explains how prism #refracts light.
The angle between the incident light and the emergent light is the angle of #deviation.
So we see the emergent light bends towards the base of the prism due to refraction.
At some distance from the prism we get a spectrum on a screen. The incident light is white, the prism is transparent. So, where did the colours come from?
Are they present in the white light? Very true!
This is what #Newton proved that 'White light consists of various coloured lights.'
The #spitting of white light into its constituent colours is called dispersion of light. The various colours are #Violet, #Indigo, #Blue, #Green, #Yellow, #Orange and #Red.
The acronym #VIBGYOR is used to memorise the colours.
All the colours may not be distinct.
