Part of the first batch of The Smiths' compositions from fall 1982, "Handsome Devil" appears on compilation LP "Hatful of Hollow," and was also recorded for the band's first BBC session with John Peel on May 18, 1983 - just a few months after the final, classic Smiths lineup was set earlier that year.
The Smiths also recorded this song even earlier in 1982 with a version featured saxophone! As random (and intriguing) as the trumpet in the demo of Never Had No One Ever?
The song was a contender for the debut self-titled LP, but was rejected in part due to the controversy around the lyrics.
