Bio:
Founded in 2006, Bureau Detours (detours.biz) is a creative organization that creates social environments in public spaces. Based in Denmark, the group is a diverse mix of designers, craftsmen, architects, and visual artists and is organized in small cells located throughout Europe: Aarhus, Copenhagen, and Kolding, Denmark; Oslo, Norway; Bordeaux, France; and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Each cell is set up with a new project in a city and becomes a local base for providing insight into that place. By constructing urban interventions on a 1:1 scale in public space, Bureau Detours aims to inspire citizens of all ages to connect with their city and neighborhood.
Statement:
How to Make Public Space Public----How to Enable Non-Experts to Use and Inhabit Public Space. A Video in Four Parts (2013) highlights projects that Bureau Detoursrealized in 2011 and 2012. The projects were chosen because of their different connections to the theme of 'Non-Expert.'
Pedel fit vildnis (Pimp Your Wilderness, 2011) was about leading by example. By transforming a run-down urban space into a park, they involved local residents in taking care of their city.
The video concludes with ÆØAA (2012)was a workshop where we taught children about public space by teaching them how to build furniture (benches, swings, flower pots, etc.) and use it to make a neighborhood nicer.
Vejforskning (Road Research, 2011), an Aarhus-based initiative that offered ordinary citizens a car-free weekend, bringing about increased interaction, security, and physical activity. Bureau Detours obtained the necessary permits and blocked all the roads for motorized traffic from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening.
